Is Adipex Right for Me?

If you’ve been struggling to lose weight despite diet and exercise, you may be considering prescription weight loss options like Adipex®. As an FDA-approved appetite suppressant, Adipex can help curb your hunger and support your weight loss journey — but it’s not the right choice for everyone.

At Novell Primary Care and Weight Loss in Tallahassee, Florida, we conduct a comprehensive physical exam and take your medical history to determine if Adipex is right for you.

In the meantime, read on to learn how Adipex works and when you might consider it as part of your weight loss program.

How does Adipex work?

The active ingredient in Adipex (phentermine) works by stimulating certain areas of your brain. When certain neurotransmitter levels increase, two things happen: it suppresses your appetite and increases your energy levels.

By suppressing your appetite and helping you feel fuller for longer, Adipex makes it easier for you to stick to a reduced-calorie diet and create the calorie deficit needed for weight loss.

Who is a good candidate for Adipex?

Adipex is designed for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. You might also consider Adipex if you have a BMI of 27 or higher with weight-related conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol.

If you’ve struggled to lose weight through diet and exercise alone, Adipex may be an option to jumpstart your progress under our team’s medical supervision.

Who should avoid Adipex?

Adipex isn’t recommended if you have a history of heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, or a history of drug abuse.

It may also interact with certain medications. That’s why we review all of your current medications and supplements during your initial appointment.

What to expect with Adipex for weight loss

When you’re considering Adipex — or any type of weight loss medication for that matter — you probably want to know what to expect in terms of results, side effects, and maintenance.

With Adipex, you can expect the following:

Weight loss

Adipex is most effective when combined with lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet and regular physical activity. Adipex has been shown to be highly effective for weight loss.

An estimated 87.2% of people using phentermine achieve at least a 5% weight loss within six months. This success rate is higher than many other anti-obesity medications, including phentermine/topiramate (67.7%), liraglutide (58.1%), and naltrexone/bupropion (35.3%).

So, what does a 5% weight loss look like? If you weigh 225 pounds, a 5% weight loss is 11.25 pounds. This may seem small, but it can take up to 45 pounds of pressure off your knees, boost your confidence, and reduce your risk of conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Of course, with healthy lifestyle habits, you can continue losing even more weight and improve your overall quality of life.

Side effects

While some people experience mild side effects like dry mouth, insomnia, or increased heart rate, these usually improve as your body adjusts. If you’re concerned about any side effects, don’t hesitate to let your Novell Primary Care and Weight Loss provider know.

Regular check-ins

Our team also recommends regular check-ins. You may consider:
