What is the right fitness plan for me?

There are a number of exercises that support safe weight loss and overall health. Because no single exercise can address all of your needs, the team at Novell Primary Care and Weight Loss can help you create a fitness plan that includes a mix of activities.

Ideally, you want to create balance in your exercise routine that includes 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise a week (or 30 minutes a day, five days a week) and two or more sessions of strength-training exercises per week.

 

What type of exercises should I do?

Your Novell Primary Care and Weight Loss provider can suggest exercise types based on your physical abilities and your health. In general, you can incorporate several types of exercises into your routine, including:

Strength training

Strength training, also called resistance training, typically involves the use of weights to build muscle and prevent bone loss.

You should exercise your major muscle groups at least two times a week and schedule a day of rest in between to allow your muscles time to recover.

Flexibility exercises

Flexibility exercises, including yoga and stretching, help to lengthen and relax your muscles and reduce your risk for injuries. You should engage in these types of exercises several times a week to stay strong and flexible.

Aerobic exercises

Aerobic exercise, also known as cardio, includes activities that make your heart and lungs work harder and help you burn calories.

Aerobic activities include brisk walks, swimming, and riding a bike, and it’s recommended that you get at least two and a half hours each week.

Balance exercises

For older adults, balance exercises are also important to reduce your risk for injuries from falls and to boost overall health.
