EKG Explained: Why Heart Screening Matters No Matter Your Age

You might think heart screenings are only necessary later in life, but your heart health matters at every age. Whether you’re in your 20s, 40s, or beyond, an EKG (electrocardiogram) is a simple, noninvasive test that can show how your heart is functioning.

Considering that heart disease is still the leading cause of death in America, it’s never too early to think about your heart.

Below, our team of primary care providers at Novell Primary Care and Weight Loss explains what EKGs are and why they’re important.

What is an EKG?

An EKG is a quick test that records your heart's electrical activity. During your EKG, we place up to 12 small sensors on your chest, arms, and legs to measure how your heart beats and how well signals travel through it.

The sensors, which are attached to your skin with sticky pads, relay information to a computer that then prints graphs. These graphs show your heart rate, how often it beats, and any abnormalities in your heartbeat.

It’s painless, noninvasive, and takes just a few minutes, usually 1-5 minutes.

What can an EKG detect?

An EKG measures electrical signals in your heart. Our team can use that information to identify a range of heart-related concerns, including:

Even if you feel fine, an EKG can reveal issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Why heart screenings matter at every age

Heart conditions don’t always come with obvious warning signs, and they don’t only affect older adults.

In your 20s–30s

Even if you feel fine or don’t have any current heart disease risk factors, you can still benefit from an EKG. An EKG can establish your cardiac baseline and detect asymptomatic abnormalities.

In your 40s–50s

Heart screening becomes even more important as risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and weight gain become more common with age.

In fact, the prevalence of high blood pressure increases significantly as you age. About 22% of adults ages 18–39 have hypertension, compared to 54.5% of adults ages 40–59, and nearly 74.5% of adults over age 60.

These rising risk factors make routine screening, such as an EKG, an important step in identifying potential issues early.

60 and beyond

Regular monitoring in your sixties and beyond helps manage heart health and detect changes early.
