Why Most Diets Fail - And What To Do Instead
Nearly 100 million Americans are obese, and 22 million are severely obese. Yet an estimated 160 million people are on a diet at any given moment.
So why do most of these diets fail? Hint: it’s not willpower!
Read on as our team of primary care providers at Novell Primary Care and Weight Loss shares six reasons most diets fail and how we can help you.
1. You’re not counting calories accurately
Many people underestimate how much they’re actually eating by 20-50%. Small extras, especially sauces, dressings, cooking oils, and snacks, add up quickly.
Even healthy foods contain calories. Without tracking portions and understanding macronutrients, it’s easy to unintentionally eat more than your body needs.
That’s why structured macro tracking and meal planning matter. When you understand how proteins, carbohydrates, and fats contribute to your daily calorie total, you gain control instead of guessing.
2. You’re not building muscle
Cardio alone isn’t the best way to shed unwanted pounds. Muscle tissue is metabolically active, which means it burns more calories at rest than fat tissue. When you strength train and build lean muscle, you naturally boost your metabolism.
If you focus only on calorie restriction without resistance training, you may lose muscle along with fat. That slows your metabolism and makes long-term weight maintenance harder.
You can’t outrun a bad diet, and you can’t starve your way to sustainable results either. Nutrition and strength training must work together.
3. You’re not sleeping enough
Surprisingly, sleep (or lack thereof) can influence your weight.
When you don’t get enough rest:
- Hunger hormones increase
- Cravings rise
- Energy for exercise drops
- Recovery slows
Chronic sleep deprivation makes it harder to lose weight and easier to regain it.
4. You’re not eating enough
This one surprises people. Severely restricting your calories can backfire. When you consistently under-eat, your body adapts by slowing your metabolism to conserve energy.
As a result, you may then feel tired, irritable, and stuck, even though you’re eating very little. This is why diets that are too restrictive fail.
5. Your hormones aren’t balanced
Sometimes, it doesn’t matter what your diet is. If your hormones aren’t balanced, you might struggle with weight. Hormones like insulin, cortisol, thyroid hormones, estrogen, and testosterone all influence how your body stores and burns fat.
If they’re out of balance, fat loss can feel nearly impossible, even when you’re doing everything “right.”
6. They aren’t realistic
Sometimes diets fail because they aren't realistic. If a diet requires eliminating an entire food group, eating foods that you don't enjoy, or following rules that you can’t maintain long-term, then it’s not a sustainable lifestyle.
Extreme diets may “work” for a few weeks, but they never work long-term.
What to do instead
If you’re not seeing the results you want, you don’t have to problem-solve on your own. At Novell Primary Care and Weight Loss, we customize weight-management plans that help you:
Focus on sustainable weight loss
Our team helps you create realistic weight loss goals so you can lose weight and enjoy life at the same time.
Track your macros and learn more about macronutrients
Macronutrients, like protein, carbohydrates, and fats, form the foundation of your nutrition plan. When you learn to balance them properly, you support muscle growth, metabolic health, and changes in body composition.
For example, protein contains four calories per gram, carbohydrates contain four calories per gram, and fat contains nine calories per gram. Understanding how these numbers add up gives you precision rather than guesswork.
Our team can help create meal plans just for you.
Try a strength-focused fitness plan
We don’t just recommend exercise; we help you build the plan that helps you reach your goals. At Novell Primary Care and Weight Loss, we can help you create a strength-focused fitness plan designed to build lean muscle and boost your metabolism.
When you add resistance training, whether through Peloton programs, Orangetheory Fitness classes, or personalized workouts, you burn more calories at rest and support sustainable weight loss.
Consider hormone replacement therapy (when needed)
If hormone imbalances are part of the problem, our team can check your hormone levels and get you started with hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
We offer HRT as injections, so you don’t have to worry about creams or patches.
